Oak - Reception
Summer 1
This term our topic is ‘New Life’, and we are beginning with a very exciting event - a special delivery of chick eggs arriving in April! The children will have the wonderful opportunity to observe how chicks grow and change over time.
In our reading, we will enjoy The Great Goat Chase by Tony Bonning, followed by What the Ladybird Heard, alongside a range of non-fiction texts that explore life cycles and new life. We will also bring our learning to life through hands-on investigations at our school pond, where we will observe frogspawn and (hopefully!) watch it develop into tadpoles. We have already had a surprise froggy visitor hop into our EYFS area recently, who we carefully returned to its pond!
In Understanding the World, we will be exploring maps, and in RE we will be learning about ‘Special Times’. In writing, we are continuing to build our skills by moving from single words to captions and simple sentences. We are focusing on using finger spaces between words and applying our Phase 2 and 3 phonics in our independent writing. The children really benefit from lots of encouragement both at school and at home to help build their confidence in this important area.
It’s set to be a fun and busy Summer term - we can’t wait to get started!

Key Information for Parents
To keep up to date it is vital that parents regularly read our weekly newsletter, which is emailed directly to you on a Friday. This is packed with important information and key dates for your diary.
Reading at Home
Reading is very important and it opens up a world of learning to our children. At Barrow our long term aim is for all children to develop a passion and love of reading, as well as becoming confident readers across the curriculum.
Every child at Barrow will be given a school banded reading book by their class teacher and a phonics book. The phonics books will be changed on Fridays, in line with new sounds being taught in class. The book band books will be changed as needed, after reading through a few times and being confident with the text and comprehension. We ask that all children read to an adult THREE times per week and this should be signed and recorded in your child's reading diary. This will be checked weekly by your child's class teacher. In addition, all children will choose their own library book, they can keep the book for ONE week and must return it to school on their allocated library diary. If your child does not return their library book, they will not be able to take another book out.
After School Clubs
Details of termly after school clubs will be displayed on the school's newsletter. To book onto an after school club please contact the school office.
