Phonics
Our Intent
At Barrow URC Primary School, high quality phonics is the prime means for how we teach children early reading, alongside our bespoke English curriculum which is underpinned by quality texts, language and vocabulary. We teach direct, focused phonics every day in the Early Years and KS1, following the Red Rose Letters and Sounds systematic, synthetic phonics planning programme (Lancashire Professional Development Service), using the Letters and Sounds approach.
To support our phonics scheme, we use a range quality reading books from My Letters and Sounds. Bug Club Phonics and Oxford Reading Trees Floppy's Phonics. These are all phonetically decodable books which are matched precisely week by week to the Red Rose Letters and Sound phonics programme.
